As I turned left onto Ocean View Drive, blue and red lights flashed in my rear-view mirror. I pulled over and rolled down my window.

Deputy Alex Molina appeared next to my door. He spoke. “License and registration, ma’am.”

“Hello, deputy,” I said. “I’m going to reach into my purse for my driver’s license, and my registration is in the glove compartment.”

Molina lowered his voice. “I wanted to talk with you, Ms. May.” He took the driver’s license I handed him and pretended to study it. “I heard you found another body.”

“It’s not my fault.” I heard defensiveness creep into my voice. “I stopped by to talk to Quimby because I’d heard he’d been spreading rumors about me. I don’t like people spreading gossip, especially when I’m the subject.”

“I believe it was a rumor involving you and the sheriff.” He handed back my license. Raising his voice, he asked for my registration again.

I fumbled through the contents of my glove box until I came across the registration which I handed him.

“There’s nothing between the sheriff and me,” I said firmly. “Nothing.”

“I know that,” Molina said. “Someone wants to get rid of the sheriff, and they’re willing to go to great lengths to do it. The recall campaign wasn’t going anywhere, in spite of what Quimby said—the sheriff is too popular. I’m worried whoever’s behind it is going to use the murder to take down the sheriff.”

“How are they going to do that? Lots of bad press if he doesn’t solve it?”

“Possibly,” he said. “Or maybe worse.”

“Worse?”

“I can’t say any more than that.” He handed me back my registration. “Be careful. If you get involved, as I know you probably already are, there’s a good chance you’ll be putting yourself in danger. Someone has murdered once. They’ll do it again if they think someone is getting in the way. I don’t want that someone to be you.”

Goosebumps ran up my arms. “You’re serious.”

“Deadly serious.”
